The Woman From… (2023); Directors Michals Englerts and Malgorzata Šumovska; 132 minutes; Featuring: Malgorzata Hajevska, Joanna Kulig, Mateusz Wieclawek, Bogumila BajorWoman of… Englerts (1975, originally a cameraman, but now also a director of various productions). They are the inheritors of a great history of Polish cinema, which deals with often topical social themes. The woman from… is no exception.

The story jumps back and forth a bit, so you have to pay attention

Aniela Wesoly (Malgorzata Hajewska) was born Andrzej and turns out to be in the wrong body as a man. This fact is cleverly communicated at various points in the film, but it’s not until the middle of the film that it becomes clear that Aniela wants to become the woman she already is. From the very first image of a woman, it becomes clear to a good listener that the light curls of the young man going to his first Holy Supper are a reference to the theme of the film. Despite this latent fact, young Andrzej develops as a normal boy with normal boy things. He marries Iza (fantastically played by the multi-talented Joanne Kulig) and the couple have children. In the movie, the flashbacks are marked with the year in which the flashback takes place.

All this takes place in a turbulent social context

Around the age of 18, Aniela has to come for a medical examination in the military service (1980), where it turns out that the painted toenails will disqualify her from the service. From this point, Anjela’s interest in herself grows and we see more and more of Anjela’s secret glances at herself and where she tries to present herself as a woman. Despite the 'ordinary' Life seems to be hers, the awareness that she is in the wrong body grows and plays a bigger role in Woman of…. This realization is the reason for the distance between Aniela and her wife and her family. The fall of the Wall, the creation of Solidarnosc around 1980, the accession to the European Union in 2004 and all other political changes in Poland after 1986. In Poland, the power of conservative parties and the Catholic Church does not change.

A woman from

Aniela’s journey to official gender reassignment is fraught with obstacles, prejudice, and resistance. It’s dedicated to everyone in the LGBTQ community and their loved ones for a reason. In order to change her gender, she has to divorce Iza and go to court with her parents. In the end, the break with Iza becomes final, and Aniela has to stand on her own two feet: find a home, a new relationship, a new job, because she is fired from her job for seeking sex. In Woman of… there are only so many side paths that are accessed and developed. It makes for good cinema, and the acting in the film is of high quality and sometimes even phenomenal.

The camera work is also very high quality

The film runs for over two hours, which is a bit on the long side. Not every side path is necessary and sometimes it distracts from the main topic. The film was selected to compete for the Golden Lion (2023) at the Venice Film Festival (as well as the Queer Lion). Woman of…. makes it clear that life as a transgender person in Poland is not easy and portrays it perfectly.Ton IJlstraRating: 4Released May 2, 2024.
